A New York Times article discusses the online university put together by the Western Governors’ Association. The key quote is how the online education is supplemented by mentors who reach out on a weekly basis to ensure students are on track.
“The human contact with the mentor, the calls saying, ‘Did you get that chapter done, did you have any problems?’ was critical,” Ms. Hermetz said. “There’s constant communication. I’m sure this isn’t for everybody, but when you’re more mature, and you really want to get something done, I can’t imagine a better way.”
How can your organization use mentors to keep everyone on track. And do you know what the track is?

We have a job posting up that indicates very specific requirements. We request a cover letter so that candidates can explain how they match to our requirements. Unfortunately the vast majority use the cover letter to regurgitate their resume rather than tell us how they fit. I guess it’s tough applying for jobs all day long but the truth is if you take the time to tailor your cover letter you’re going to get a closer look.
